In the modern market there are a lot of mills of different levels and classes. These machines are found in the assortment of still very young companies, and engineers can not imagine that the machine designed by them does its job qualitatively.


What is a milling machine for? It is indispensable when you need to cut a groove, a groove, align the edge of the workpiece, cut out the curly profile on it. But these are the examples that you remember right away. But the milling cutters still perform decorative processing (cut out patterns) or prepare niches for locks, hinges or corners. For sure, many paid attention to the profile of rectangular “protrusions” on the surface of the wooden door.

The milling cutter is a more accurate and effective alternative to the LSM or planer when you need to round the edge of the part (for example, at the countertop) or to chamfer the chamfer.

Vertical bars are an important element. True, they are not important in themselves, but in interaction with the head. And she, first, should sit on them firmly, without backlashes and distortions, and secondly, to go on them smoothly.

Platform. In most cases, it consists of two layers: a wooden lacquered (or plastic) plate is glued on the cast base, which is smoother, so gliding over the surface will be better due to less friction. On the platform there are special ears, into which the rod of the parallel stop is inserted and fixed with screws. The number of such attachment points can be different: from two to four.

The turret stops, if one may say so, the deep mode of the cutter’s immersion (more about this later on). Another important point is the opening for the cutter. From its size depends the maximum diameter of the cutting part of the tooling.

Parallel stop. At expensive milling cutters it is cast. This design is more reliable (it is resistant to lateral leads due to greater rigidity) and is clamped on the guide rods by screws in several places. For those specimens that are cheaper, the point is stamped, that is cut out of a thick sheet of steel, and the guides are often simply screwed onto it.

Collet clamp. It consists of a collet, to which the rotation from the engine, the clamping nut and the insert (a kind of adapter) is transmitted. The latter is a round hollow bushing with vertical slots, due to which it can be squeezed.

The inner diameter of the insert should be equal to the diameter of the shank (there are variants of 6, 8 and 12 mm or, for example, 6.35, and 12.7 mm – European standard in terms of fractions of inches per millimeter).
